3 Champion Acts Crowned at The Ultimate Voice 2015

Make way for the next wave of talented Singaporean singers and musicians!

Earlier this month, SAFRA’s The Ultimate Voice 2015 finally crowned its 3 champions – James Rainier for Solo English, Jeff Ng for Solo Mandarin and the pairing of Jannassa Neo and Rachel Mak for Group Acoustic. Prior to the finals, judges Amos Teo, Jack Lim and Shirlene Tia held a mentoring session for all contestants to give them the necessary pointers on song delivery and stage presence.

We sat down with the judges before the event for a quick chat about the competition.

“They have great potential. I think they’re also very serious in learning so I think they’ll be able to achieve a lot in future,” commented Amos Teo, the founder of Hark Music.

L-R: Jack Lim, Goh Shi Han, Shirlene Tia and Amos Teo

Sitting with him on the judging panel for the finals were fellow producer Jack Lim, singer Shirlene Tia and 88.3 Jia FM DJ Goh Shi Han.

“Of course they are the best out of all the contestants since the auditions. Amos and I are looking out for new talents for future collaborations,” added Jack.

As the assistant music director for 88.3 Jia FM, Goh expressed her excitement for the potential growth of local music playing on radio and how she was looking out for something different in the competition.

“More personal style would be good. Not imitation of any particular artiste,” she said.

Shirlene agreed, stating how the participants were all very unique and talented in their own ways.

“Some of them are here to build confidence. I think they're very brave and courageous to put up a performance in front of everyone especially their close ones. There are also those who are really very good.”

On the other hand, Amos was more drawn towards those who were more serious in making music while Jack mentally picked out the ones who could work the stage and command the audience more than the others. Each judge may have their own style of critiquing but their collective assessment proved to be useful feedback for the contestants.

In the bustling Bugis+ mall, the atrium was packed throughout the event with the participants’ supportive family and friends. Even curiosity got the better of shoppers who didn’t take long to join and watch.

Jeremy Teng, TUV Winner 2013, and Fairus Adam, TUV Winner 2012

Perhaps what attracted them at first were the familiar voices of the competition’s past winners Jeremy Teng and Fairus Adam. They performed their respective debut singles that were written, composed and produced by Amos. ‘Keep Running’ as performed by Fairus and ‘No More Hiding’ by Jeremy both served to keep in line with the inspirational theme that Amos had envisioned for SAFRA’s The Ultimate Voice. For this year, he intended to do the same.

“It’s to give out a positive message to encourage people to really be the best that they can be. For example, the song is called ‘No More Hiding’ because Jeremy used to be a very shy boy who basically lacks self-confidence but he has a lot of persistence for his passion. That’s why he has become what he is today,” Amos explained.

It was a great way to open the grand finals as this was indeed the prize to win; an original song to be aired on SAFRA radio. And boy, did everyone give their all! Champions for all 3 categories also stood a chance to win a $1000 cash prize, a gift hamper from the sponsors and perhaps the most exciting one, a performing contract with the SAF Music & Drama Company (MDC) worth up to $1,200.

Co-hosts, DJ Ben and Noah Yap

We also managed to speak with Noah Yap, who hosted the event with 88.3 Jia FM DJ Ben, about his time in MDC.

“MDC is a very good platform for me to train my hosting skills. Before MDC, I wouldn’t dare to call myself a host. So if you love singing, dancing, hosting or any talent in the media industry, MDC is honestly a very very good platform for people like you. It’s for young people who want to train their talent and you make a lot of great friends here. It’s really awesome.”

Even MDC’s very own bands Camokakis and Jam-A-Lot entertained the Saturday afternoon crowd with their covers of popular songs and their own original works.
